At Tung Chung Kindergarten, we value connecting with our community and its natural environment. Since 2021, we have run an outdoor learning program inspired by the Forest School philosophy, designed specifically for our school by a Forest School practitioner.
Outdoor Learning offers numerous benefits for both physical and mental health. Through activities and play in natural environments, children engage in physical movement, improving their coordination, strength, and gross motor skills. Additionally, exposure to nature and open-ended play promotes mental well-being by reducing stress and stimulating creativity. These experiences allow students to engage in activities involving calculated risks, building resilience, and creating courageous students in their learning.
We implement an educational approach outdoors, where young children engage in hands-on learning experiences in natural environments such as Bermuda Park, Pui O Beach, Tung Chung waterfront, and the school garden. We purposefully plan our program to allow knowledge and skills to transfer between these spaces so that students can consolidate their understanding, practice skills, and evolve their understanding as the program progresses. The outdoor setting provides a rich sensory experience, stimulating their senses and enabling interactions with natural materials and elements.
Outdoor Learning allows families to experience school life and learn alongside their children. It relies on volunteers to support the learning that takes place. Volunteers are present to help promote safety and engage in learning, including circle times, games, and focus activities. To ensure our students receive the best experience possible, all volunteers must complete volunteer training including child safeguarding, and adhere to the Tung Chung Kindergarten volunteer guidelines.
